Making a difference

Greetings from Lift Up America!

Donating protein and fresh produce really makes a difference in a community.
Qualcomm Stadium, CA -- November 13, 2007 --

We have learned three things about our Food Distributions:

1. It really makes a difference in the city.

2. Agencies that have received food often come back to volunteer.

3. Many agencies turn around and give to others.

At our recent San Diego Charger Food Distribution, we had a chance to meet many of those involved in giving and receiving the 30,000 pounds of Tyson chicken and other food items.

It makes a difference:

"We serve over 500 people a week, many of whom are homeless. We also have many seniors that live in the surrounding senior retirement towers. So, the protein really helps provide the energy that they need to get back on their feet."

- Lisa Seiler, TACO (Third Avenue Charitable Organization)

"When we served chicken and gravy with mashed potatoes, everybody that ate was really surprised that we were able to get these kinds of meals rather than just spaghetti or peanut-butter and jelly."

- Dave De Witt, City of Refuge

"It means a lot to me. I'm on Social Security. You don't get much on Social Security so it means a lot to me."

- Velma Torve

Recipients become volunteers:

"We've been here for a couple years receiving. So, this third year we really want to give back and to be part of the volunteerism that's going on 'cause we've been blessed so much already."

- Tony Maresca, Set Free San Diego

Agencies give to others:

"We give a lot of food away as well. So we've not only eaten the chicken but we've given chicken to families, those that are in need."

- Dave De Witt, City of Refuge

"This Chicken will help feed the kids at the learning center and the men at Teen Challenge. We will also invite a couple agencies from the neighborhood to come out and have some of this chicken."

- Kent Hines, Teen Challenge

Two truckloads of Tyson protein helped the Chargers and Lift Up America to meet on-going hunger needs and the additional needs due to the wildfires.

Local charitable agencies are able to provide healthy and nutritious meals for their communities thanks to the generosity of companies such as Tyson Foods. Here a local volunteer loads a box of Tyson chicken into the vehicle of a local agency.

These San Diego Charger players are ready to distribute hundreds of pounds of fresh produce to area families at our recent San Diego Food Distribution.

This young lad could not wait to enjoy his Tyson chicken!

Here are the key ingredients to a successful event: generous companies (Tyson), caring sports teams (San Diego Chargers), hardworking volunteers, and fresh produce donated by a local food bank. Together we can Lift Up America. .
