Seeing is believing.
At our New York City event, over 600 inner-city students were able to tour the USS San Antonio. The man in charge of the Navy's newest and most technologically advanced vessel is Commander Brad Lee, who spoke to each group. His personal journey from disadvantaged youth to Navy Commander is tangible evidence to these kids that they too can rise above their circumstances. Lee, who was recently profiled in Ebony Magazine, believes that seeing inspirational role-models is critical to any long-term success in our less fortunate communities.

The 13-story high USS San Antonio was the dramatic backdrop to our National Kick-Off and food distribution. It can hold 400 sailors, 800 Marines, tons of aircraft, fighting vehicles and even other navy vessels. Surprisingly, it also has a dry-cleaners, laundromat, post office, dental ward, two operating rooms, a pharmacy, and three gyms.

Many of the military personnel volunteered to distribute food to the less fortunate of New York City. We are grateful for the excellent example these men and women of the Navy display both on and off duty.

Vice Admiral Fitzgerald, Commander of the Second Fleet, inspires another generation at the LUA New York event.
